Summer activities for Chatham history buffs and house guests

When you can’t go to the beach .....

  • Consider taking a walk in the Old Village with the help of “The Old Village: A Self-Guided Tour (updated in 2005). Note especially the newly constructed Coast Guard station garage. Beautifully designed and compatible with the other historic buildings on the property, the garage both meets the needs of the Coast Guard and honors the past. The Association especially wants to thank CW04 Stan Wilczynski for his cooperation and sensitivity to neighborhood needs.

  • Browse through “The Creative Spirit: Art and Artists in Chatham’sOld Villagewhich features profiles of past and present Old Village artists, with examples of their work. Both the guidebook and the art book are for sale at the Chatham Historical Society gift shop.
  • While picking up your books, be sure to visit the newly renovated Chatham Historical Society’s Atwood House and its spectacular fishing exhibit. Another gem, the Nickerson family museum at the 1772 Caleb Nickerson House on Orleans Road is open to the public on Wednesday mornings 9-12 through September. You may also buy “The Creative Spirit” there.

Two Old Village authors have new books, especially for children

THE ORB Of CHATHAM by Bob Staake. A haunting mystery with pictures of local scenes, enhanced by an interactive web site (adults will also want to read this).

THE LITTLE SOCK PIRATE by John Whelan. Children are sure to be enthralled by this cheerful, delightfully illustrated tale which tries to answer the age-old question: why did that second sock disappear from the laundry?

THE ASSOCIATION ORAL HISTORY PROJECT NEEDS YOUR MEMORIES OF THE OLD VILLAGE !
